This is an adapted version of our daily GaP Starters, designed specifically for Year 1 to build confidence with early sentence skills.

These quick daily activities focus on:

• recognising what makes a complete sentence
• building simple sentences using who + doing
• using capital letters and full stops correctly

The activities are intended to be short, whole-class and largely oral, helping pupils develop automatic sentence habits through repetition.

Teacher note:
To keep the focus firmly on sentence sense and sentence demarcation, other punctuation is not introduced at this stage. These starters are designed to support consistency, confidence and fluency before moving on to more complex sentence work.
